While I find the Christmas, Channukah and New Years can cause anxiety in many people, Easter comes as a rejuvenating hint of spring, and I like to make it a real celebration in my family. I've always loved this spring holiday, but I have to try to keep it stimulating to my family. Here are a few of the ways that I do that.

* While store-bought coloring can be fun for children, older kids may love creating their own dyes at home. Children, by ages 7 or 8, start loosing interest in the mysteries of the Easter Bunny and begin to become more intrigued by art, chemistry, and making messes. You can make food coloring dye at home by mixing a cup of boiling water with about 30 drops of dye and a teaspoon of vinegar. Be sure to cool the dye before using it. For creative designs or adding names, before dipping the eggs in the dye, write over them with crayons or a candle, put rubber bands around them, or wrap them in waxy dental floss. After dying them, take off the bands or dental floss to uncover the neat designs youve made! Or try adding two tablespoons of vegetable oil to the cooled dye-beat to blend the oil and dye-then quickly drop the egg in the mixture while the liquids are still separate; the finished product will be a colorful, marbled egg. You can also test boiling your eggs in various kinds of tea for more subtly colored eggs. Make sure you keep the eggs refrigerated until time to eat!

* Make Easter a fun holiday for everyone in your home. Do not ignore your husband. Chances are that he wouldn't enjoy a chocolate bunny or chick, but I'll bet he'd still get a kick out of an Easter surprise. Just be certain that it's aimed at more adult tastes! Last year I ordered my husband a gourmet cheese and wine basket. On Easter morning, while he was still sipping his Easter cappucino, I hid it in the house along with the kid's Easter baskets. I plan to make that an annual tradition. While the kids are happily biting into the colorful candy on Easter morning, my husband and I make plans for enjoying our gourmet Easter basket and some special quiet time in the evening, when the kids have settled down.

* Long after the truth of the Easter Bunny has been discovered, your family will still enjoy the Easter egg hunt. Whether indoors or outdoors, whether you make it a competition or a relaxing stroll, whether the booty is to be distributed among everyone or the finder gets to keep winningsthe choices are endless! Be creative and develop your own Easter tradition over the years; adapt the practices as your kids grow-up, and your whole family will have a memorable Easter holiday !
